Sand separators and silt separators are hydrocyclone units designed for fine cleaning of drilling mud, i.e. for removing abrasive solids (solid particles of a certain size) from the solution. The first stage of such cleaning is called sand separation, and the second-silt separation.
The principle of operation of the units is based on the separation of suspended particles by mass under the action of inertial forces arising in the vortex flow of hydrocyclones.
Combined in a two-or three-cone unit with a diameter of 10 inches, the hydrocyclone sand separators can process large volumes of drilling mud per cone, but they only separate a fraction with large particles. Therefore, for further cleaning of the solution, it is often necessary to use sludge separators as well.
The sludge separator is a drilling mud cleaning unit consisting of a battery of 4-inch diameter sludge separation cones that can be positioned directly above the vibrating screen.
